Bronx, NY – In a Men's and Women's Basketball double header Thursday night the results could not have been more different. The women, who were looking to recover after a tough loss on Tuesday, were unable to keep up with the Rockland Community College Hawks as they lost 51-83. The Men, who were looking to pick up where they left off on Tuesday after getting an exciting win, took on the Falcons of Dutchess Community College and got their 8
th straight win beating them 91-42.
As the Women took on the Hawks,
Kristina Shcherban racked up 25 points giving her, her highest point total for a single game this season.
Melsha Messam added 10 points and 9 rebounds, but the Caimans were plagued with turnovers and could not get the win.
The Caimans came out playing well in the first half, points by Shcherban and
Mecca Norfleet kept Hostos in the game. With 10 minutes to play in the half and the score at 9-15 it looked like the Hawks might be pulling away, but a quick basket by Shcherban kept the Caimans within 4 making it 11-15. The Hawks got a basket by Alex Gunderman to take a 6 point lead but
Tamesha Briggs immediately answered keeping the Caimans within 4 at 13-17. Rockland's hot shooting (71% from 3 point range and 50% overall in the half) helped them go on a 27-3 run giving them control of the game and smothering the Caimans hope of catching them. With the loss, Hostos goes to 3-4 on the season but remains 2-1 in CUNYAC play.
The Men followed in the second part of the double header taking on the Falcons.
Chad Coachman led the Caimans with 17 points, while
Jeremiah Brown added 12 points and
Chris Van Buren and
Tyree White each contributed 10 points. White also racked up 10 rebounds giving him his second straight double-double.
D'Angelo Briscoe and
Tyler Washington each put up 8 points as well and the Caimans secured their 8
th straight win.
In a game where the Caimans only trailed for the first 20 seconds there was little doubt that Hostos would come out on top. The Falcons made the first basket of the game giving them the 2-0 lead but Hostos quickly took the lead on free throws and a quick jumper by Brown. A made free throw by Washington added to the lead on top of points by Coachman and Hodge making it 9-2. The Falcons fought back getting a basket by Rainard Wrote and a three point play on a basket and free throw by Michael Sirmon to make it 9-7. Hostos then went on a 13-2 run to make it 22-9. With the game in control the Caimans made sure not to let up playing tough defense and making smart plays while racking up 11 steals and 20 rebounds going into the half leading 45-21. The second half was much of the same with the Caimans dominating the boards and outscoring the Falcons 46-21 to make it 91-42 in the end. With the win Thursday the
Caimans are now 8-1 overall leading the CUNYAC with a record of 3-0 and at the top of Region XV of the NJCAA.
