Hostos Splits Double Header

Bronx, NY – In a Men's and Women's Basketball double header to conclude Fall Sports in The Swamp on Thursday evening, the Caimans settled for a split. The Women's, team was looking for a second straight win as they hosted the Westchester Community College Westcos, but were unable to get the win bringing their record to 4-5 overall. The Men's, team took on the Monroe College Mustang's JV squad and got their 11th straight win and improved their record to 11-1 overall.

The Women came out fighting hoping to get their record back up over .500. Kristina Shcherban and Mecca Norfleet each had 15 points to lead the Caimans, while Shcherban also added 9 rebounds, but the Caimans were unable to hang with Westchester and lost 40-62.

Westchester took an immediate 7-0 lead off of 2 baskets by Karissa Core and a 3 point bucket by Emonni Cropper. Hostos responded with baskets by Norfleet and Melsha Messam to make it 4-7, but the Westcos continued to tack on the points and took an 11-4 lead. Hostos came blaring back to come to within 2 keeping it close. The first half remained close but stayed in Westchester's favor with Hostos close behind going into half time trailing 26-28. The Westcos started the second half on a 9-2 run effectively taking control of the game. Hostos was unable to come back and Westchester got the win.

The Men came out hyped for their last game of the Fall Semester. Chad Coachman led the way with 24 points, while Chris Van Buren added 16 points and Tyree White contributed 11 points helping the Caimans to a 99-42 win.

Hostos started the game with an 18-0 run, forcing the Mustangs to take a time out. Monroe came out of the time out and got their first points on free throws made by Fredric Bower making it 18-2. The Caimans kept control of the game, executing on offense, shooting almost 46%, making 22-32 free throws and keeping turn overs low. On defense, Hostos never allowed Monroe to settle in, with season high steals (22) and defensive rebounds (37) the Caimans once again showed they are one of the top teams in the country.

Women's Basketball travels to Globe Institute of Technology on Saturday December 15th to finish off their Fall Semester. The Men look forward to January 5th when they will host Globe Institute of Technology for their first game of the new semester.
