Bronx, NY – In a Men's and Women's basketball double header against the Queensborough Community College Tigers on Tuesday night, the Caimans came out on top. For the Women, the win boosts them to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in CUNYAC play. While the Men keep their winning streak alive at 10, improve to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in CUNYAC play.
The Caiman Women started the night with an intensity that had been missing in their previous two games.
Melsha Messam had a season high 17 points,
Johnasia Turner added 15 points and
Mecca Norfleet,
Tamesha Briggs and
Kristina Shcherban each contributed 8 points to lead the Caimans to a 67-61 victory.
The Tigers took the lead to start the game on a 3 pointer by Shantana Kanhoye. Hostos answered immediately with a quick basket by Briggs, a steal by Norfleet and another quick basket by Messam to give the Caimans the lead, which they held onto for the rest of the game. Hostos played excellent defense racking up 12 steals (6 by Norfleet), and 28 defensive rebounds allowing few put back points for the Tigers. On offense the Caimans were able to control the ball better and keep their turn overs to the lowest total since their win over Bronx CC on December 1
st.
The Caiman Men followed looking to extend their winning streak to 10 in a row and illustrate why they received honorable mention voting in recent national poll.
Chris Van Buren led the Caimans with 17 points,
Chad Coachman had 16 points and
Maverick Hodge and
Jeremiah Brown each added 9 points to give the Caimans a 78-42 win and keep their winning streak booming.
Queensborough got the first basket of the game on a jump shot by Fiyifoluwa Ojugbele to take a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for Queensborough, when the Caimans took back the lead at 8-6 on a jump shot by Coachman, it was for good. Hostos once again showed why they have a nationally ranked defense recording 33 defensive rebounds and 13 steals. The Caimans controlled the game keeping the Tigers at arm's length and cruised to a victory.
Thursday is another double header for Hostos Basketball as the Women host Westchester CC at 6:00 PM and the Men host Monroe (JV) at 8:00 PM. Come by The Swamp to cheer on the teams in the last home game for the Fall semester.
