Box Score The Caimans had a slow start against the nationally ranked Broncos, but a second half surge led to an 87-78 overtime victory. The Caimans went small in the last minutes of the game, capitalizing on their speed and ability to take it to the basket.
David Ivanov showed his versatility against the Broncos, shooting the long ball while also going strong to the basket. David shot 11-15 (73%) from the field, resulting in a game-high 27 points. Coach Poole states "David played his heart out and was the difference maker in such a highly contested game".
Jemal Smith added another double-double to his season totals, finishing with 19 points and 11 assists.
Jefferson Francois was just shy of a double-double, scoring 9 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Jahkeem Folks continues to be impactful, adding 11 rebounds, 6 points, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 1 steal. In overtime,
Moses Denis made some key baskets for the Caimans, adding 7 points and 7 rebounds, while
Shane Neal contributed 7 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
The Caimans end the season as CUNYAC Regular Season Champions. Coach Poole adds, "we are proud of the way the Caimans finished the regular season and are excited to represent CUNY in regional play".
If this week is any indication of how far the Caimans can go in the off-season, we are in for another national run. With all players suiting up last week, the Caimans beat the #5 and the #8 nationally ranked teams.
The Region XV Tournament is February 26-28 at Monroe Community College. Since other regional teams still have games to play, the Caimans are awaiting whom they will face in the first round. Of the potential match-ups, CUNYAC could have an unprecedented 5 teams represented in regional play.
