Bronx, NY - With a 23 win season and 13 out of 14 student-athletes who remained eligible at Fall '12 semester break, the Caimans, continued to show why the Men's Basketball Program is the place to be for Junior College Basketball. The team fell short of National Championship aspirations as six of their seven loses all remarkably came down to the final possession of each game. Yet, this was a season to remember and cherish the solid student-athletes who exhibited team sacrifice over self-indulgence.
The team received National attention as they stayed in the National Rankings for close to two months (12/4/12 to 2/12/13) and were ranked as high as #7 in the country. Local media such as News12 in the Bronx began to take notice of the Caimans and report on the team's successes. This furthered the fuel to succeed as the team took home the CUNY Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship with an 8-0 record. This led to Coach Jody King, Ph.D and Staff receiving the Coach of the Year Award and
Tyree White (Rookie of the Year),
Maverick Hodge (Sportsman of Year), and
Jeremiah Brown (CUNY All-Star) all garnering CUNY awards.
Overall the 23 win team finished tied for second place with a 17-3 record in NJCAA Region XV. The Caimans played a team ranked in the National Top 10 four times as they beat Nassau and Bronx yet lost to Sullivan after having leads versus Sullivan with the final minutes concluding. Great victories versus Passaic, Division 1 Globe CC, Rockland, and Suffolk helped set the tone for the season. Within the Region,
Tyree White was named 2nd Team All Region,
Jeremiah Brown and
Maverick Hodge were named Honorable Mention, and
Rishawd Hendricks was named to the Sportsmanship Team.
Even though the Caimans fell short of competing for a National Championship this season, they continue to grow since Coach King's arrival. In just two years, the team is averaging 21 wins per season, two consecutive Regional Tournament appearances, two consecutive CUNYAC tournament appearances, and most importantly 29 of 31(93.5%) student-athletes remained eligible and retained academic success.
With the return next season of possible Pre-Season All American
Tyree White, as well as,
Chris Van Buren and
Arthur Lowe, the Caiman bite looks stronger than ever. Stay tuned for an exciting 2013-14 season ahead. Make sure to visit
