Caimans Come Close to Upset

#7 Hostos loses 70-66 to #4 Sullivan County

Bronx, NY – With 9 minutes remaining in the game the Caimans took back the lead for the first time since 10 minutes into the game. It looked like the #7 Hostos Caimans were going to be able to pull off the upset of the #4 Ranked Sullivan County Community College Generals on Thursday night. But it was not to be for the Caimans, as the Generals rallied back with 4 minutes left to take the lead once again and get the 70-66 win.

Hostos started the game on fire going 5-5 with three pointers by Chad Coachman and Jeremiah Brown to open a 12-2 lead. Sullivan surged back though, going on a 20-3 run to take a 24-15 lead. Hostos struggled for the remainder of the half going into halftime down 27-38. Brown and Coachman finished the half with 7 points while Chris Van Buren and Tyree White added 4 points each.

After struggling the final 10 minutes of the first half the Caimans came into the second half fired up. Baskets by White and Brown helped Hostos go on a 16-7 run to tie the game up with 14 minutes left to play. The Generals buckled down to take the lead again, but not for long as layups by Maverick Hodge and Brown brought them to within in 1 at 49-50 and a jump shot by Corey Staley gave them a 51-50 lead. Hostos maintained the lead until a basket by #23 Willie Williams III of Sullivan with 4 minutes to play, gave the Generals back the lead which they held on to for the remainder for the game to get the win. Jeremiah Brown led the Caimans with 20 points, Tyree White added 14 points and Chad Coachman put up 11 points. For the Generals Williams III had 18 points and Marcu Henderson put up 12 points.

With the loss Hostos falls to 20-3 overall and 15-2 in Region XV but they remain 7-0 in CUNYAC. The game that was scheduled for Saturday Feb. 9th against Nassau CC has been POSTPONED due to weather. The next game for the Caimans will be Tuesday Feb. 12th as they host Bronx CC in a doubleheader and celebrate the end of regular season play with Senior Night. Tip-off for the Women is 5:00 PM and for the Men 7:00 PM. Come out and pack the house for the Battle of the Bronx! Let's Go Caimans!
