Courageous Fight Leads To Valiant Win For Hostos Men's Hoops Against Rival Nassau!

Bronx, NY - No less than twenty hours after a heart breaking overtime loss to Queensborough in the CUNYAC Semifinals, the Caimans (23-5) went to Nassau (16-9), and with a #2 seed on the line for the upcoming Regional Tournament, came out victorious 60-53 on Wednesday evening.  Now it appears that the only remaining tie breaker will be a coin flip to determine the #2 seed for the Regional Tournament which begins next Friday, March 1.

"To a man we were ashamed of the previous game and knew we had to fight to regain our own respect tonight," stated Coach King. Yet, the game started out with Nassau jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Two immediate time outs appeared to reenergize the Caimans as they stormed back to take an 8-7 lead with 13:52 remaining.  The game remained no more than 2 points in favor of the Lions of Nassau throughout most of the first half. With Hostos' ball with 0.5 seconds left in the half, Rishawd Hendricks, buried a corner 3 pointer to put Hostos ahead at the half 28-27.

Hostos took the momentum from the first half to push thru in the beginning of the second half. A tight game, the Caimans opened up an 8 point lead, 44-36, with 11:52 remaining. Over the next 7 minutes, and with Nassau, itself, wanting to head into the Regional Tournament on a positive note, fought to tie the game at 50-50 with under 5 minutes remaining. But an amazing driving basket by Jeremiah Brown (11 points) and a rebound and basket by Tyree White (12 points) helped Hostos run off a 6-0 run to lead 56-50 with 1 minute remaining.  Free throws by Maverick Hodge (9 points) helped seal the dramatic win for Hostos, 60-53.  An elated Coach King stated after the game, "We are a group that knew we had to solidify and validate our success this season as a program and finally tonight we grasped the moment and succeeded." Tyler Washington finished with 9 points and Hendricks had 11 for Hostos.

Moving forward the Caimans will close out the regular season with a contest versus the Tigers of Princeton on Monday.  Then the postseason begins with the NJCAA Region XV Tournament on Friday, March 1st at New Roc City in New Rochelle, NY. The Caimans are currently tied by Regional Record (17-3 regional record and 23-5 overall) for 2nd place and it appears the only remaining tie breaker is a coin flip to take place Sunday morning.
