Bronx, NY - The Caimans traveled to Poughkeepsie, NY on Thursday night to face NJCAA Regional XV foe Dutchess Community College and pulled away with a 102-52 win. The win is number 15 for the team in just 17 games and guarantees them a second consecutive season with an above .500 regular season winning percentage! The team now stands with an overall record of 15-2 (11-1 Region XV, 5-0 CUNY).
The game started off slow for the Caimans as they clung to a 22-14 advantage with 8:50 remaining in the half. The quickness of Dutchess, along with Jerrell Benitez's early 6 points, helped keep Dutchess close. Yet, over the remaining 8 minutes the Caimans began to explode going on a 19-6 run to end the half up 41-20.
Khalid Yousef came off the bench to score 8 points and
Rishawd Hendricks joined him with 9 first half points.
Tyree White also added 11 points to round out the scoring.
The second half opened up with Hostos pushing further ahead. With ten minutes remaining the Caimans were capping off a remarkable 33-10 run to push the lead to 74-30. The overall run going back to the first half was 49-16. Led by
Maverick Hodge's 12 points and 8 assists the Caimans closed the game with everybody on the roster playing 20 minutes and 9 student-athletes scoring 6 or more points. Yousef finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds, Hendricks had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Tyree White continued to be a dominant force, picking up for others, as he finished with a team high of 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Tyler Washington,
Chris Van Buren, and
Rahlek Smith all finished with 9 points.
Jeremiah Brown had 7 points while
Arthur Lowe had 6 points.
Darren Wilson rounded out the scoring with 4 points off the bench.
The story remains the remarkable two year success of the Hostos Men's Basketball Program under the guidance of Coach King. The team has not only had all 14 remaining members retain eligibility from the Fall semester but continues to compete at a high level in the tough waters known as Region XV NJCAA Basketball. Up next for the Caimans is a road trip to Ulster CC to visit the Senators next Tuesday and a chance for its Sweet 16th win. Game time is set for 7pm. Let's go Caimans!
