Hodge's Maverick Approach Steals the Win for #9 Hostos

Norfleet Leads Women to 4-1 in CUNYAC

Bronx, NY - Men's and Women's Basketball got the sweep Tuesday night when they traveled to Lower Manhattan to take on The Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers. Maverick Hodge would not let his team lose as evidenced by his steal with .15.1 seconds remaining and two made free throws with the game tied at 62-62 boosting #9 Caimans to a 66-62 victory versus their Conference rival. While Mecca Norfleet was unstoppable on offense leading the women to a 48-46 win. The win propels the Men to 14-2 on the season overall (10-1 in Region 15 & 5-0 in CUNY) and the Women to 6-8 overall (4-1 in CUNY).

The Women went out ready for redemption Tuesday night as they faced the only CUNYAC team to beat them so far (12/4, 44-54). Mecca Norfleet led the team with 23 points, going 6-9 on the free throw line. Kristina Shcherban put up 9 points while new comer Justina Davis added 8 points. The Caimans got the win playing tough defense and keeping turnovers to a minimum.

For the Men, who went into the game missing key players due to injuries and recovering after a tough loss to West Point Prep on Saturday, Tuesday was an important game to get back on track. They started the contest up 9-4 with baskets by Tyler Washington and Tyree White. The Panthers hung around in the first half due to Hostos' inability to protect the basketball early. Two 3 point shots made by Chris Van Buren and a baseline jumper by Henderson Belle kept Hostos ahead for the half and gave them a 29-23 lead going into halftime. Hodge, Van Buren, and White all had 6 points apiece for the half.

The second half began the same way it ended for Hostos; the lead, but unable to pull further ahead. With 9:14 left in the second half the Caimans went up 44-39 but within one minute the Panthers clawed back to tie the game at 44-44. The back and forth continued for the remainder of the half until Hostos thought they were in command with a 59-53 lead and 2 minutes remaining. Yet, poor free throw shooting and key baskets by Mati and Djombalic of BMCC tied the score again, this time, 59 all.  Again tied at 62 and Hostos with the ball, an offensive foul was called to give BMCC the ball with .15.1 seconds left.  As BMCC inbounded the ball, Hodge, stole the ball and was fouled. He made both free throws and an ensuing rebound off of Mati's miss for BMCC. White nailed another two free throws to seal the game for the Caimans.  Hodge had 10 points, Jeremiah Brown had 9, Washington had 13, and White finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds for Hostos.

Up next for Hostos Men is another road game, this time, versus NJCAA Region 15 opponent Dutchess CC on Thursday January 17th. Game time is scheduled for an 8PM tip off. Hostos is 1-0 versus Dutchess on the season and 3-0 over the last two seasons.  While the Women are set to travel to Nassau CC on Saturday January 19th for a 1PM start. Let's go Caimans!
