Retro Night in Full Force as the Men’s Basketball Team Was Victorious 87-72 vs. Kingsborough

Hostos outmatches Kingsborough in CUNYAC Men's Basketball battle
What was a must win for Kingsborough, to keep ground for obtaining a birth in the CUNY Conference Tournament and the NJCAA Region 15 Tournament, was just as an important game for the Caimans (18-5) who are driving towards securing momentum heading into the CUNY tournament and obtaining a #3 seed in the upcoming Regional Tournament.  Yet, a flashback toward the yesteryear of college basketball had many amused last night when both Head Coaches walked onto the court before the start wearing the same sport coat, which brought back stories of the days of St. John's and Georgetown with Coach Carnesecca and Coach Thompson.

When the game began, Hostos started strong opening up with a 15-2 lead only to see Kingsborough score 12 unanswered points to cut the lead to 15-14.  Hostos fought back with stifling defense to push the lead back to double digits.  During this span, freshman, Jeremiah Brown, continued his stellar play of late, by taking his defender back door, catching the pass, and throwing down a tomahawk dunk to ignite the entire gymnasium and help push the Caimans into the locker room with a 46-31 lead at the half.  Brown had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals for the half.  Brandon Stolz led all first half scorers with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 2 steals.  Charles Jackson and Maverick Hodge rounded out the scoring with 10 and 7 points respectively.

The second half; Hostos opened up strong and pushed their lead to above 20 points.  That was not enough as Kingsborough fought back to cut the deficit to 8 points with mid way to go in the half.  Kester Chase led the charge for Kingsborough with 14 of his 19 points in the second half.  Hostos was able to remain in control and never allowed the contest to get below 8 points as the lead bounced between 10 and 15 points the remainder of the game for the victorious Caimans by a final score of 87-72.  Stolz finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds.  Jackson had 20 points and 8 rebounds.  Hodge finished with 13 points and 8 assists.  Brown and Brian Morrison each finished with 10 points.

This was an important win for the Caimans since Hostos is trying to secure the #3 seed for the NJCAA Region 15 Tournament which takes place March 2-4 in New Rochelle, NY.  With the win the record now stands at 18-5 overall in NJCAA Region 15 and 6-2 in the CUNY Conference standings.  Up next for the Caimans is a take home battle for the #3 seed as the Caimans head to Nassau Community College to face the Lions this Saturday for a 3pm start time.  The Lions and Caimans are both battling for the coveted high seed.  With a win, the Caimans can clinch the #3 seed.  Come support the Caimans this Saturday as the team continues to embark upon waters only chartered during the successful early years of the Hostos basketball program.
