Bronx, NY – The Hostos Caimans won their 9
th straight game Sunday afternoon, beating the Nassau Community College Lions 67-62. The Lions, who were ranked number 7 in the National Polls for the week of December 3
rd, are the second team that Hostos has beat in eight days that was ranked. (Bronx CC was ranked No. 7 when the Caimans beat them 12/1) The win puts them at the top of Region XV and in the running to be nationally ranked this coming week.
Maverick Hodge and
Jeremiah Brown each had 13 points,
Chad Coachman added 12 points and
Tyree White put up 11 points for the Caimans offense. It was the nationally ranked defense however, that secured the win for Hostos, recording 4 blocks and 8 steals to boost the Caimans to the win.
The game started with Nassau taking an immediate 8-1 lead as the Caimans started the game 0-5 in field goals and 1-2 in free throws. Down by 7 Hostos began to battle back going on a 21-4 run to take a 22-12 lead. The Lions crept back to within 5 but the Caimans went into half time leading 31-26.
The Caimans came out of half time hoping build on their lead, they looked to be on their way as Hodge started the half with a 3 point play giving the Caimans an 8 point advantage. But Nassau was not ready to give in and went on a 13-6 run bringing them to within 1 with 13 minutes left to play. The score remained close with the teams trading buckets, with 5 minutes left in the game the Lions finally took over the lead on a 3 pointer by Cory Alexander. Trailing for the first time sense 8 minutes into the first half the Caimans tightened up on defense and went back to the basics on offense. With 2:40 left on the clock Hodge made a jump shot to take a 59-58 lead. On the next play Hodge got a steal to give the Caimans possession with just over 2 minutes left. In the final minutes of the game the Caimans were a perfect 8-8 in free throw shooting which proved crucial to getting the win.
With the win Sunday, Hostos improves to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in Region XV. On Tuesday December 11
th the Men's and Women's teams are back in action in a doubleheader against Queensborough CC. The Women start at 6:00 PM and the Men follow at 8:00 PM, come by and cheer the Caimans on as they fight to keep their CUNYAC records on top! Let's Go Caimans!!
