The Hostos Women's Basketball team is on a roll with a win last night that brought their season total to three and matched last season's win total with a 65-62 nailbiter over the County College of Morris in Randolph, New Jersey.
The Titans started the game on a 9-1 run as things look frustrating when freshman forward
Kristina Shcherban picked up her second foul in the first 5 minutes of the game. Hostos cut the deficit to four points at the 9:11 mark in the 2nd period after being down, 35-26 at the half.
The game remained tight until the last couple minutes of the game. Freshman guard
Jaeivonnte Wright knocked down two free throws to bring the Lady Caimans within three points. After regaining posession, Wright hit
Keosha Taylor for the three-pointer at 1:22 to cut the lead to two. A contested shot led to a defensive rebound by
Kristina Shcherban who calmly hit both free throws after being fouled to tie the game at 61.
The words of Head Coach
Jessica Vilella were similar to last minute efforts, "Defense leads to offense. Let's get stops on defense and create opportunities on offense."
The Lady Caimans did just that with guards
Jaeivonnte Wright and
Keosha Taylor applying pressure. Taylor got the steal and fed Wright for the basket and their first lead of the game, which could not have come at a better time. The County College of Morris, who only shot 9-for-18 from the line for the game, hit one of two free throws on the ensuing play. In the end, the Lady Caimans held onto the game by making free throws and following instructions on the sidelines from Vilella and Assistant Coach
Andre McCullough.
