Hostos Head Women’s Basketball Coach Dwight Shaw Steps Down

BRONX, N.Y. – Dwight Shaw is stepping down as head coach of the Hostos Community College women's basketball program after five seasons to pursue other opportunities.

Since taking over the program ahead of the 2021-22 season, Shaw helped transform the Caimans into one of the top NJCAA Division III programs in the region, compiling a 94-32 overall record while leading the team to multiple conference and regional championships.

In his first season with Hostos, Shaw guided the Caimans to a 17-6 record, a CUNY Athletic Conference championship, and an appearance in the NJCAA National Championship Game. He was named CUNY Coach of the Year while also coaching the conference's Player of the Year.

Hostos continued its success during the 2022-23 season, finishing 20-5 overall and repeating as CUNY champions. Shaw again earned CUNY Coach of the Year honors and coached CUNY Player of the Year Aiyana Hicks, four NJCAA All-Region 15 selections, and an NJCAA Division III All-American Honorable Mention selection.

The Caimans followed with another strong season in 2023-24, posting a 21-5 overall record and capturing a third consecutive CUNY championship. Shaw was once again recognized as CUNY Coach of the Year and coached three NJCAA All-Region 15 performers.

Hostos reached another milestone during the 2024-25 campaign, finishing 26-3 overall while winning both the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship and the NJCAA Region XV Championship. Shaw earned both CUNY Coach of the Year and NJCAA Region XV Coach of the Year honors. That season also saw Daja White named both the CUNY and NJCAA Region XV Player of the Year, while Hostos produced three NJCAA All-Region selections and an NJCAA Division III First Team All-American honoree.

This past season, Shaw coached two NJCAA All-Region 15 performers during the 2025-26 campaign.

Coach Shaw played a major role in elevating our women's basketball program over the past five seasons," said Brent Wilson, Director of Athletics at Hostos Community College. "His passion for the game, commitment to our student-athletes, and dedication to building a competitive and supportive culture helped establish Hostos as one of the top programs in the region. We are grateful for everything he has done for our department and wish him nothing but success in his next chapter."

Over five seasons, Shaw helped lead Hostos to three straight CUNY championships, an NJCAA Region XV title, and an appearance in the NJCAA National Championship Game while mentoring numerous student-athletes who earned conference, regional, and national recognition.

A national search for the program's next head coach will begin immediately.
