Hostos Men's Basketball Starts Season Off On High Note

Following a disappointing 2009-10 season in which the team was ousted from a chance to play in the CUNYAC Championships in a play-in game against Queensborough Community College, the Hostos Men's Basketball team has started the 2010-11 season in style.

In their first game, Hostos dominated Rockland Community College with freshmen David Love and Christopher McCullers leading the way to victory 71-55. Love poured in 22 points on 9-15 shooting including three from beyond the arc while McCullers chipped in with 16 poiknts and 6 assists.

The 2009-10 CUNYAC Champion Kingsborough Community College and Raritan Valley Community College were up next and Hostos didn't disappoint. They went on to control the ball almost completely throughout both contests finishing off KCC 74-61 and RVCC 81-74.

Love continued his scoring spree with 16 and 20 points, respectively. He also held a 65% Free Throw Percentage throughout the first three games to lead the team in that category as well as scoring [20+ points per game]. Elliot Rogers made his presence known in a huge way as the freshman went on to have two double-doubles with 16 points/14 Rebounds against KCC and 12 points/13 Rebounds against RVCC. The feat was good enough for Rogers to pick up a CUNYAC Player of the Week Award and an NJCAA National DIII Player of the Week Award.

The lone bump in the road for the Caimans came against Region XV rival Ulster County Community College as sloppy play and poor free throw shooting by both teams kept the contest close. However, in the end Hostos lost in the heart pounding action of the final seconds 72-71. Brandon Stolz joined Love, McCullers, and Rogers on the list of the great performances of the season as he played to his first collegiate double-double with 23 points and 10 Rebounds. He added 3 Assists and 2 Steals.

The Caimans went into the Thanksgiving Weekend with an overall record of 3-1, 2-1 in NJCAA Region XV, and 1-0 in CUNYAC.

While details are still not known, word from many players shows the Caimans have swept through the weekend's Springfield Tech Challenge by beating Gateway Community College 78-68 on Saturday and going on to beat the host school Springfield Technical Community College on Sunday 68-67 bringing the team to 5-1 overall. Due to neither school being in Region XV or CUNYAC the Caimans remain 2-1 in the region and 1-0 in CUNYAC.
