Soccer Ties at The Battle of the Bronx

After 110 minutes of play Hostos record goes to 1-0-1

Freshman Forward Oumar Mbaye strikes for the Caimans
Bronx, NY – The second the whistle blew it became apparent to all who witnessed the 110 minute Battle of the Bronx Monday evening, that it was going to be a close game. The Caimans, who scored 4 goals in their game last week, had just 3 shots on goal in the match, while the Broncos, who also played their second regular season game of the year last night, had 6.

The first shot of the game came in the 6th minute on a cross through the box from a Bronx midfielder. Hostos Goal Keeper, Vanessa Ama, was easily able to intercept it, but the Broncos continued to pressure and were rewarded with a corner kick in the 10th minute. The corner kick was cleared by Mahamadi Compaore to end the immediate danger but set up another corner for the Bronx. This time Ama got a hand on the ball and redirected it to Hostos forward Oumar Mbaye who cleared it from the danger zone.

The Caimans got their first chance to put some pressure on the Broncos in the 17th minute when Ousman Dibba beat the Broncos defense to tap a shot past the Goal Keeper Meldryck Parraga. With the ball headed towards an empty net a Bronx defender raced to stop the ball and save a goal for the Broncos.

The half ended tied 0-0 with few goal opportunities on either side.

The second half started with excitement with one of the Broncos forwards breaking past the Caimans defense for a one on one opportunity with Ama. Ama came out of the goal to cut the angle perfectly and force a bad shot.

The rest of regulation passed in a blur being dominated by set plays and corner kicks. Overtime was much of the same;
neither team would be able to finish the match with a goal ending the game in 0-0 draw.

The Caimans, who remain undefeated in CUNYAC and Region XV play, return to play Wednesday September 19th at Borough of Manhattan CC in their first road game of the season. They return to the Bronx, after playing at Dutchess CC on September 21st, to take on Suffolk CC 4:00 PM at Macombs Dam Park on Monday September 24th.
