Bronx, NY – After maintaining a tie throughout regulation the Caimans could not hold on in overtime and lost to defending Region XV Champions, the Nassau CC Lions, 2-1. Hostos' record fell to 3-2-2, while Nassau improved to 6-3-1.
With few scoring opportunities for either team in the first 45 minutes the first half ended tied at 0-0. The Caimans came into the second half fired up recording 10 shots in the last 45:00 minutes while Nassau had just 7. To start the second half
Oumar Mbaye beat the Nassau back line and took the ball down the right side of the field on a breakaway. Mbaye crossed the ball into the 6 yard box hoping it would land at teammate
Vitalis Nujimem's feet, but Nassau Keeper Kevin Benavides intersected it keeping the Lions out of danger.
In the 54th minute Hostos broke through as Nujimem took on a Nassau defender and the Goal Keeper Benavides. The defender tried to keep Nujimem from touching the ball, but he was able to reach around and tap it past Benavides, breaking the tie and scoring the only goal for the Caimans.
Hostos held onto the lead for 25 minutes until the 78
th minute when Nassau tied it up after catching Hostos goal keeper
Vanessa Ama out of position and chipping it over him. With the match once again all tied up it went into overtime.
In over time during the 94
th minute a foul right outside the 18 yard box directly in front of the goal gave Nassau a direct kick. The shot curved perfectly around the Caiman wall sailing into the net out of Ama's reach and giving Nassau the overtime win.
“That was a tough way to lose a game, but we have to move on, get ready for the game on Wednesday and play our game. The season is not over yet and we still have a shot at post season play.” Coach Carlo Limongi said Monday after the game.
The Caimans ONLY have TWO more home games this season.
On Wednesday October 3rd Hostos takes on Rockland at 3:00 PM then on Friday they battle Westchester at 4:00 PM on Senior Day. Both games are at Macombs Dam Park so come by and cheer on the team as they fight to keep their post season dreams alive.
