If there ever was a game that mattered the most this season, it was the last home game for the Hostos Caimans Men's Soccer team. In a conference match-up that started with cool fall weather and high speed winds, the outcome almost turned as ugly as the weather.
Hostos jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to goal scoring machine
Souleymane Sidibe with a full extension runner to the right side of the net at the 11 minute mark. As the rain came down in the second half, the Caimans began to let up. At the 6 minute mark, Queensborough midfielder Juan PInto Franco had a penalty kick that sailed far right. Another scare came when the Tigers regained possession and had an open look in a 1-on-1 with goalie
Emmanuel Adesanlu. Defender
Mamadou Alpha Diallo sprinted from the right side of the field to the ball and kicked the ball away before a shot could be attempted in another gasping situation for Hostos fans.
As compared to the two shots in the first half that did not make anyone jump out of their seats, a high speed boot from Queensborough forward Jovanni Parkinson at the 44 minute quickly reminded people why his team was leading the conference. This score deadlocked the game at one and forced the game into sudden death overtime.
In both overtimes, Queensborough gained full possession and safely passed the ball in its backfield in a strategy questioned by some and answered by none. Lucky for the Caimans, the tie moved them into second place in the conference and a CUNY Athletics Conference Finals rematch against Queensborough on Monday, October 17th at 7:00pm at Macombs Dam Park.
The Caimans finished the regular season with their best conference record yet at 1 win, 0 losses, and 3 ties (good for a #2 seed) and earned their first ever trip to the CUNYAC Community College Men's Soccer Championship.
Fact: Hostos is undefeated at Macombs Dam Park this season with a record of 2-0-2.
