New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Hostos Women's Basketball team faced off against Nassau Community College in the Region XV Semifinals and for the third time this season. The Caimans were hot right out of the gate starting the game with a 22-5 run over the Lions to set the tone of the game. The Caimans stayed in control for the second half and went into the halftime locker room leading 44-19. In the Second half Nassau took the third quarter by a score of 16-14 and chipped away at the Hostos lead but the Caimans were able to stay in control and won by a final score of 79-62.
With the win the Caimans are now 14-4 overall and are currently ranked #10 nationally in the latest NJCAA poll and will face #1 seed Monroe-Bronx in tomorrows Region XV Championship game tomorrow at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY at 12:00pm.
Leading the way for Hostos was freshman guard
Dimon Walker who netted 18 points, six assists and four steals. Freshman Guard
Savannah Williams added 17 points and six rebounds while fellow freshman guard
Starr Garcia posted a 14 point night with five rebounds and three assists. In the paint sophomore forward
Ayanna Brown added nine points and 10 rebounds. Also having a big night for the Caimans was sophomore guard
Shania Lewis who hauled down a game high 13 rebounds to go with six points.
As a team on offense Hostos shot 45.6% from the floor and 32% from deep while dishing out 19 assists. On defense the Caimans out rebounded the Lions 47 to 34, held Nassau to 30.9% shooting from the floor while forcing 17 Nassau turnovers.
The #2 seed Caimans will now face the #1 seed Monroe-Bronx in the Region XV championship at 12:00pm on Sunday, February 27 at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Fans are welcome and the game will be streamed on the Monroe Express website.
