Bronx, N.Y. - The 2022 Hostos Men's basketball team opened their season on the road in a face off with conference and borough rival Bronx Community College. The Caimans started off strong in the first half with Coach Poole using his bench to spark the Caimans to a 57-39 lead at the half. In the second half the Broncos charged back making it a game but Hostos held on to take the win in the Battle of The Bronx by a final score of 97-78. With the win the Caimans are now 1-0 overall.
Leading the way for the Caimans is returning all CUNYAC guard Marquis Paulin who paced the Caimans with a team high 16 points and a game high eight assists while also adding five rebounds. Off the bench sophomore guard Donta Sanders netted 15 points to go along with five assists and and four steals. Also having a big night for the Caimans was freshman guard Justice Carrington who posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks. Freshman forward David Honore also collected a double-double notching 12 points, 14 rebounds and a game high five blocks. Also scoring in double figures for the Caimans was freshman guard Nyhem Garrett who netted 10 points on 3 of 4 shooting. In the paint sophomore forward Tionne Palmer collected eight rebounds to go along with four points and four blocks. Also having a good game off the bench was freshman forward Jaysin Pichardo who recorded nine points and five rebounds.
As a team the Caimans out rebounded the Broncos 63-45 including 18 offensive rebounds. Hostos also shot the ball well from deep knocking down 44% of their three point attempts while shooting 55.2% from the floor overall. Defensively the Caimans held Bronx to 37% shooting from the floor while forcing 29 Bronco turnovers.
Next up for the Caimans is the Johnny Jones Memorial Tip-Off Tournament at Westchester Community College on November 5 and 6. On Saturday the Caimans will face off with Mohawk Valley Community College at 3pm and on Sunday they will face the host Vikings at 3pm.
