Vahalla, N.Y. - The #8 Caimans Women's Basketball team opened their season today in the Johnny Jones Memorial Tip-off Tournament hosted by Westchester Community College against #7 Uconn-Avery Point. Tipping off against a nationally ranked opponent like Avery Point was a tall order for the Caimans but they prevailed 83-60 to move to 1-0 on the season behind a 44 to 32 points in the paint advantage, 36 points off turnovers and 21 second chance points.
Leading the way for the Caimans was freshman forward
Savannah Williams who posted 20 points and a game high 21 rebounds while also adding 5 assists. Freshman forward Ayiana Hicks added 19 point and 8 rebounds while Freshman guard
Starr Garcia notched 18 points and 5 rebounds. Also contributing for the Caimans was sophomore guard
Shania Lewis who tallied a double-double with10 points and 15 rebounds. Leading the way off the bench was freshman guard
Dimon Walker totaling 11 points and a team high 6 assists.
Avery Point was led by sophomore guard Adeline Smith who had a game high 22 points. Also having a big day for Avery Point was freshman forward Trinity Angel who posted a double double with a 13 point and 16 rebound performance.
The Hostos Caimans are back in action tomorrow in day two of the Johnny Jones Memorial Tip-off Tournament when they play host Westchester Community College at 1:00pm.
