Orangefest was a week full of fun and school spirit during April 28
th- May 1
st hosted by Hostos Athletics and the Sports' Management Club. Orangefest included Karaoke, Dodgeball, a Carnival, and Basketball Intramural Championships. Each event was open to the Hostos Community where everyone had the opportunity to engage in some fun before finals!
On Monday we hosted our first annual Karaoke Night. During the night we had a plethora of jams blasting the gymnasium while students, faculty, and staff. Some songs being sung by the brave were World's Greatest by R. Kelly, Royals by Lorde, Michael Jackson, and Brick House by the Commodores. There was over 50 brave participants who engaged in a night full of singing, dancing, and even some delightful freestyle.
Tuesday we hosted our first annual Dodgeball Intramurals. Students and staff flocked to the gymnasium to relieve stress before finals. With two courts set up and 6 teams consisting of participants. The gym was full of intensity with everyone seeking the title as Dodgeball Champions. There was great play and sportsmanship throughout the tournament and the victors was ultimately Team 3 which was filled with athletes and competitors from all different levels of play.
Wednesday's Orangefest event was a carnival day hosted inside the gymnasium for all students, faculty and staff to enjoy from 3PM until 7PM. Those who attended were treated to an array of carnival games, music and other fun activities. Those included Sumo Wrestled in Sumo suits, giant twister on a blowup mat, a blowup boxing ring with giant puffy gloves, a soccer shooting game on a blowup goal, a blowup baseball hitting game and two traditional carnival games. There was also a treats table which included carnival favorites; cotton candy, snow cones, and popcorn. There was an overwhelming great sensation around the event and its games. All 250 people who attended left with cotton candy and a smile. To those who won games played they were given a raffle ticket and entered to win a Hostos T-shirt provided by Student Activities. The games were a nice break from the stress of classes and everyday life as the semester comes to its end.Â
Orangefest concluded with the Basketball Intramural Championships. Basketball Intramurals was a month long event with 9 teams participating weekly. Each team played one another throughout the tournament and ended with the top three teams advancing. The first seeded team was Dominican Power who went undefeated during the season play. There was still two teams left to battle it out which to make it to the championship round which were The Avengers and the Untouchables went at it. The Untouchables were able to advance to the championship round and ultimately win the Title as Champion as they pulled out a victory over Dominican Power in double overtime.
