As the spring semester winds down the Athletic Department has been hard at work preparing Awards Banquet, Hostos' first ever, "Night of the Stars." The Athletic Department wanted to do something special for its student athletes who have worked so hard throughout the year. Everyone was dressed to impress for the event held in Harlem's historic Alhambra Ballroom. Those who exhibited stellar work on the court, in the classroom and in the workplace were acknowledged and awarded with prizes and generous gifts from the Athletic Department. The men's basketball team's CUNYAC Championship banner was unveiled along with the announcement that all sports would be receiving new banners to be hung in the gymnasium. A spectacular video was put together by the interns for the student-athletes, faculty and staff, and special guests' enjoyment. This video included highlights, touching photos and a special music video, this video was also given as a gift to all attendees.
Guests were treated to a three-course meal while awards were administered to those who have helped the Athletics program and to our student-athletes who have excelled in the class room and on the court. Deep appreciation was shown to award winners including; Lillian Morales, Brandy Peer, Johanna Gomez, Fabian Wander, George Aguilar, Victor Valle, Richard Pietras, and Michael Woods. They were all honored with a Service Award plaque. Makea Lowe was awarded with the Craziest Caiman award for being the Athletics' program greatest supporter and Chanel Champion and Tarell Henry took home the Employee of the Semester Awards.
Student-Athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom were recognized for having a 2.70 GPA or higher were honored with certificates of academic success and a custom 8 GB USB Flash Drive. The top bracket was the "Dream Team" whom achieved a 3.50 and above. The two players who reached this milestone were
Janaya Morris (WBB) and Jean Estupinan (MSOC). "The Shining Stars" were those who achieved a GPA of 3.20 to 3.49 which included:

Rihonna Gaynor (WBB),
Paola Martinez (WBB & WVB),
Damany Smith (WBB),
Mayorin Trinidad (WVB), and
Caroll Veloz (WVB). "The Rising Stars" honored those with a GPA of 2.70-2.99 and recognized: Gabriel Agorioge (MBB),
Haimadu Baragi (MSOC),
Vuyisile Beschta (MBB),
Ian Deitzer (MBB),
Benjamin Frempong (MSOC), and
Khalil Jackson (MBB). The Hostos Scholar-Athletes of the Year included, Jean Estupinan (MSOC),
Janaya Morris (WBB),
Gustavo Castellar (MSOC), and
Caroll Veloz (WVB), whom all received Kindle Fires for their remarkable levels of academic success. The Team Academic Excellence award was given to the team with the most outstanding academic record for the academic year. This year's recipient was the Women's Volleyball Team, with a 2.76 cumulative GPA.
The final awards presented were the athletic awards recognizing student-athletes whom not only performed at a high level but led their team by example on and off the court. The first award, the Caiman Award was presented to
Anthony Rose (MBB),
Melsha Messam (WBB ),
Ousman Dibba (MSOC), and
Mayorin Trinidad (WVB). These student-athletes exemplified leadership, sportsmanship, and determination. Most Improved Performers for the 1013-2014 season were
Jerrel Meriwether (MBB),
Rihonna Gaynor (WBB), Jean Estupinan (MSOC), and
Caroll Veloz (WVB). The final and most prestigious award was the Most Outstanding Performer Award. This year's most outstanding performers included;
Tyree White (MBB),
Mecca Norfleet (WBB),
Pedro Angel (MSOC), and
Paola Martinez (WVB).The Athletics Department also recognized and applauded the Team of the Year who had the most significant athletic success for the year and it was awarded to the Men's Basketball Team who were CUNYAC Champions of 2013-2014.
Night of the Stars Banquet Video followed the awards presentation and dessert. Student-athletes, faculty, and staff alike converged on the dance floor for some fun and showed off a final performance on the hardwood before ending a magnificent night of honor and celebration.
