Bronx- Sophomore
Rosa Sanchez Rodriguez (#2) had 14 assists, newcomer
Paola Martinez (#10) had 22 digs, but the Caimans dropped their home opener in a four-set match to the Bergen Bulldogs. The set scores were 14-25, 26-24, 22-25, 19-25.
There was no lack of excitement Wednesday evening as fans piled into The Swamp to see the Caimans first regular season game. The Caimans came out flat in the first set quickly falling behind the Bulldogs 3-0. Although the Caimans fought back to tie the set at 3-3 the score would remain in the Bulldogs favor as they went on to win 25-14.
After dropping the first set Head Coach Tracey Igwe got the Caimans fired up for the second. They took an early lead of 5-2 and would only concede the lead once throughout the set and then immediately take it back. With excellent serving by Sanchez, great hustle by returning player
Okeisha McLean (#1), the Caimans took the second set 26-24.
In the third set the Caimans came out strong with an 8-1 run. But this time as they hung on to the lead the Bulldogs rallied late in the set overtaking the Caimans and winning the third set 25-22.
The third set would prove to be a momentum breaker for the Caimans as they lost the fourth set with the Bulldogs dominating 25-19.
Although the final results may not have been in the Caimans favor the overall match showed promise for the young Caimans. With only 3 returning players on their 9 player roster the Caimans have unlimited potential. By newcomers stepping up the play and the returning players showing what they are made of, the Caimans can certainly make a splash this season.
