Hostos Beat Rockland CC Hawks in 5

Caimans get first win Region XV play

Bronx, NY – Freshman Paola Martinez led the offense with 13 kills and added 16 digs on the defensive side, Kristen Shcherban racked up 10 kills and Sophomore Rosa Sanchez Rodriguez had 32 assists as the Caimans beat Rockland 3-2 on Tuesday night. Set scores were 22-25, 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10.

The Caimans win first Region XV game of 2012, improve to 2-4 overall and now have the most wins in a season since 2010. The Hawks fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in Region XV play.

Sophomore Evelina Nova tallied 18 digs while freshman Carmen Vasquez added 16 digs and 7 kills.

The five set match Tuesday night could not have been a closer matchup of two teams, with the biggest score differential being 7 points. The first set had 5 lead changes, with it all starting with Rockland taking a 3-1 lead. The Caimans came firing back though getting 5 straight points to take a 6-3 lead. They held that lead until the Hawks tied it up 10-10 and then took a 13-11 lead forcing the Caimans to take a time out. The Caimans came out of the timeout ready to go, taking 6 of the next 8 points and taking back the lead 17-15. Rockland called a time out to calm things down. Coming out of the time out they were able to take 3 of 4 points to tie up the set at 18 all. The Hawks took control of the set at this point without conceding the lead the rest of the set and winning 25-22.

Hostos came into the second set fired up and took the first 4 points. Rockland came back taking 7 of the next 10 points making it 7-7. The Caimans took the lead once again and held on to it until the Hawks tied it up at 19. The teams then traded points until it was once again all tied up at 25. Hostos was then able to get two consecutive points to win the set.

The third set was another close one, the Caimans, once again, came out fired up taking an early 2-0 lead. The teams traded points until it was tied 15-15. The Caimans would put together 4 consecutive points off of extraordinary defensive plays by R. Rodriguez, P. Martinez and Nova to keep the play going and take a 19-15 lead. The Caimans proceeded to win not giving up the lead the rest of the set.

The Caimans started the fourth set strong taking a 7-3 lead. Rockland came back to take control of the set and went on to win with the biggest score differential of the match 25-18.

The Hawks came out hard in the fifth set taking an immediate 2-0 lead. The Caimans were not going down without a fight though and took a 4-2 lead which they did not give up the rest of the set. They went on to win the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

“It was an exciting match, the girls really fought hard to get the win and it was big for them! Hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the weekend, when we travel to BMCC on Thursday and face off in a double header on Saturday.” Tracey Igwe, Head Coach said after the game Tuesday. The win puts the Caimans in excellent position to going into a weekend full of games.

It's Homecoming weekend for the Caimans starting on Friday September 28th the Men's Soccer team takes on Orange County CC 3:00 PM at Macombs Dam Park as they fight to stay at the top of Region XV. Women's Volleyball will play a double header on Saturday September 29th 12:00 PM vs. Ulster County CC and 1:15 PM vs. Dutchess CC at The Swamp! Come cheer on the Caimans in a weekend full of the excitement!
