Bronx, NY—It was an emotional night for the Caimans as they honored the three graduating players,
Okeisha McLean,
Rosa Sanchez Rodriguez and
Yuly Rodriguez, who played an integral role in leading the Caimans to one of their most successful volleyball season ever. The Caimans went into the first set fired up ready to battle the Queensborough Tigers who beat them earlier this season 3-1. They won the set first but were unable to keep their momentum and lost the match 3-1. Set scores were (25-15), (22-25), (17-25), (22-25).
Honored on the day the seniors sure showed up to play with
Rosa Sanchez Rodriguez racking up 26 assists and
Yuly Rodriguez leading the team with a .375 hitting percentage.
In the first set the Caimans took control early and never gave up the lead. With the Caimans leading 13-6 the Tigers took their first time out. Out of the time out Queensborough took 5 out of 6 points to cut the lead to 14-11. Once again the Caimans took control and got 11 of the next 15 points to win the set.
In the second set Queensborough took an early 4-1 lead. After Queensborough gave the Caimans a point on a serving error Hostos got the serve back and was able to take the next point to bring the score to 4-3. But the Tigers came back and took three straight points forcing the Caimans to take a time out to try to get the momentum back. Coming out of the time out the Caimans took 4 out of 5 points and tied the score at 7. The score remained close as the teams traded points for the rest of the match. With the score tied at 22 Queensborough finally broke away, taking three straight points to win the set and tie the match 1-1.
In the third set the Tigers took the lead from the beginning and never trailed. Hostos tied it at 6-6 but Queensborough quickly took over taking the third set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
With the match on the line for Hostos, the Caimans came out strong earning an 8-3 lead. Hostos held onto that lead for most of the set keeping Queensborough at arm's length. The Tigers finally got within 1 on a big kill. With their lead cut to 17-16 Hostos took a time out. Out of the time out Queensborough kept fighting taking 4 of 5 points and took over the Caimans. Down by two Hostos fought back taking three straight points and the lead at 21-20. But the Caimans were unable to hold on and the Tigers won the 4
th set and the match 3-1.
The Caimans are back in action on Thursday as they travel to FIT to take on the Tigers. On Saturday, the Caimans return to the Swamp for their Dig Pink Doubleheader to support Breast Cancer awareness. The Doubleheader, including Orange County CC, Westchester CC and Bronx CC will start at 12:00 PM. Come by for a day filled with volleyball and support Breast Cancer awareness.
