Bronx, NY – Freshman Paola Marintez had 18 kills and Freshman
Carmen Vasquez added 10 kills for the day as the Caimans split a double header with Ulster County CC and Dutchess CC. The set scores with Ulster County were, 28-26, 25-18, 25-6 and with Dutchess, 12-25, 23-25, 11-25.
Rosa Sanchez Rodriguez racked up 45 assists and
Evelina Nova added 37 digs on the day.
Hostos vs. Ulster County
The first set started well for the Caimans who took a commanding 11-6 lead. But the Senators fought back and took 7 of 9 points and tied it at 13. The Caimans took a time out and came out fired up getting the next 2 points and taking back the lead. The Caimans looked to be pulling away with a 20-16 lead but once again the Senators fought back, taking 7 straight points to regain the lead 23-20. With the match on the line, Senators leading 24-22, the Caimans took 2 straight points and tied it up keeping the set alive. The two teams traded points until the score was 26 all. The Caimans got 2 consecutive points to finish off the set.
The second set started well for the Caimans who once again took a comfortable lead of 11-5. The Senators fought back and took a temporary 16-15 lead, but Hostos proved to be too much when they went on a 10 and 2 run to win the set.
Hostos took command of the third set from the first point taking an immediate 6-0 lead. They continued to dominate the set and won by their biggest margin all year of 19 points. The Caimans won the first match 3-0.
Hostos vs. Dutchess
In the first set Dutchess took an early 11-3 lead. The Caimans were forced to play catch up for the rest of the set, but they were unable to break through only coming to within 7 briefly at 10-17. Dutchess then took 8 of the next 10 points to win the set.
The second set started on a better note for the Caimans as they took a 6-4 lead. But the Falcons went on a 6 and 2 run to take a 10-8 lead. Hosts regained the lead 14-13 after a defensive error by Dutchess. The teams then traded points making it 18-18. With the score tied Dutchess finished the set without giving the up the lead.
The Falcons came out strong in the third set taking a commanding lead that they would not loose. They dominated the set and won the match 3-0.
The Caimans finished a week full of games going 3-1, they improved their conference record to 2-0 and their overall record to 4-5. The team looks to be moving in the right direction as they take to the road this week traveling to Rockland, Kingsborough and Suffolk. They look to stay undefeated in conference play and improve their overall record to over 500.
