Dwight Shaw was named head coach of the women's basketball program at Hostos Community College on June, 29, 2021 by Director of Athletics Erik Smiles, and enters his second season at the helm of the Caimans in 2022-23.
Coach Shaw's 2021-22 Caimans squad finished with an overall record of 17-6 including an undefeated record in the CUNYAC while recording another history making season for the program leading them to their fifth straight CUNYAC regular season and tournament championship while also leading the Caimans to their fifth straight birth to the NJCAA National Tournament. At nationals Caimans rallied winning three straight games defeating Rock Valley Community College, Onondaga Community College and Minnesota Western before falling to Owens Community College in the National Championship game finishing as NJCAA National Runner-ups. Under Shaw's tutelage Shania Lewis was named CUNYAC Player of the Year while freshman Savannah Williams was named CUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Coach Shaw also was named the the CUNYAC Coach of the Year. Also named to the CUNYAC All-Star team were Ayana Brown, Dimon Walker and Starr Garcia. Dimon Walker was also named to the 2022 NJCAA National Tournament All-Tournament team.
Prior to returning to Hostos Shaw spent the 2020-2021 season as the head coach at Bronx Community College where he over saw a successful recruitment effort to rebuild the program. The roster that Coach Shaw assembled was ready to compete for a championship but unfortunately the season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before his stint as the head coach at Bronx Community College Coach Shaw was an assistant coach for the Hostos Men’s Basketball program from 2018 to 2020. Shaw was a major part of the Caiman Men’s Basketball programs success helping guide the Caimans to the 2020 CUNYAC Championship and the Region XV Championship which earned the Caimans a spot at the 2020 NJCAA Nationals. Coach Shaw also played an instrumental role in mentoring numerous Caiman Men’s Basketball student athletes onto the senior college level helping placed over a dozen student athletes at the D1, D2 and D3 levels. As an assistant coach with the Caimans one of Coach Shaw’s main responsibilities on staff was the pre-season conditioning program which has been a big part of the coaching staff’s implementation of the Caiman’s up and down fast-paced tempo and style of play. His other main responsibility was acting as the “defensive coordinator” for the Caimans. Coach Shaw has played a key role in building the full court pressure defensive system that has brought the Caimans so much success.
Prior to his time with the Caimans Coach Shaw helped lead the Nazareth Regional High School Girls’ Basketball program from 2010-2018 as the varsity assistant and head JV coach. Coach Shaw was responsible for player development at Nazareth where he oversaw the growth of a nationally prominent scholastic basketball program. During his time at Nazareth Coach Shaw developed dozens of college players including eight McDonalds All-Americans that would go on to play Division One basketball.
Coach Shaw has also been a major presence in New York City’s girls grassroots basketball scene. Currently Coach Shaw is a program coordinator for Castle Athletics where his focus is on youth player development for elementary and middle school age girls. Before joining Castle Athletics Shaw spent 2016-2020 as a coach with the New Heights girls AAU program patrolling the sidelines with the 16U and 17U teams which have produced countless Division One scholarship players. Coach Shaw is also no stranger to the gridiron. Since 2016 Coach Shaw has been the Assistant Varsity Football Coach at Holy Cross High School.
Shaw, presently a Physical Education teacher at Nazareth Regional High School in Brooklyn, New York graduated from Brooklyn College in 2010 with a dual degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science.
