Dominique Winstead enters her sixth season on the Hostos Caiman bench this season. Known as one of the hardest working recruiters in the tristate area Coach Winstead’s work ethic and passion for the game of basketball has helped raise the Women’s Basketball Program at Hostos to unparalleled levels of success. During her five previous years on the Caimans bench Coach Winstead has helped the program capture four consecutive CUNYAC Championships (2017-2020), four consecutive Region XV Championships (2017-2020) and back to back NJCAA National Championship titles in 2018 and 2019.
As Associate Head Coach, Winstead is responsible for all areas of the program including recruiting, player development and academic monitoring. Coach Winstead also is involved with helping to develop all offensive and defensive team philosophies as well as developing daily practice plans. Coach Winstead has also helped develop countless all conference and all region players including All-Americans Kyla Wilson, Skydajah Patterson and Moreina Moore.
Coach Winstead has also spent time as the Academic Coordinator for the athletic department from 2016-2019 where she was responsible for academic monitoring, team study halls, administering progress reports and acting as a liaison between the student athletes and the tutoring center. In Fall 2019 Coach Winstead moved into the college advisement office where she is responsible for advisement, registration and degree audits of all Hostos students.
Before her time on the Grand Concourse Winstead was the assistant coach at fellow CUNYAC institution Borough of Manhattan Community College for the 2014-2015 season. Prior to her time at BMCC Coach Winstead worked at The Hewitt School where she was the assistant coached for both the Varsity Women’s Basketball and Varsity Women’s Volleyball teams.
A former collegiate player herself, Winstead played two years at Northampton Community College, helping them to two winning seasons. Winstead received her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Temple University and a master’s degree in Recreation Education & Parks Administration from Lehman College. In 2017 Winstead completed The NCAA/Women Leaders in College Sports Institute for Administrative Advancement (IAA) program. IAA is a leadership development program for women in intercollegiate athletics administration. Winstead recently completed The Sports Industry Essentials certificate program at Columbia University School of Professional Studies.
