Caimans Knock Off Rock Vallay In First Round of NJCAA National Tournament

Rochester, MN - The #11 seed Caimans knocked off the #6 seed Rock Valley Golden Eagles in the first round of the NJCAA Women's Basketball National Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota on Wednesday night. With the win the Caimans will now move onto the National Quarterfinal against #3 seed Onondaga Community College on Thursday night at 8:00pm (CT). The Caimans are now 15-5 overall and in search of the programs third National Championship.

The Caimans started out on fire blasting out to a 7-0 lead and taking the first quarter by a score of 21-11. The Caiman full court press keyed the early run forcing multiple Golden Eagle turnovers which lead fast break opportunities for Hostos. The Caimans would eventually head into the halftime locker room with the lead 37-24. But Rock Valley would not go down easy as they came out in the 3rd quarter putting together a 8-0 run of their own to tighten the score. But Hostos responded with an 11-2 run in the final quarter to put the game away and capture the win by the final score of 74-59.

Leading the way for the Caimans was freshman guard Dimon Walker who netted 21 points to go along with two assists and two rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Savannah Williams also had a big night for the Caimans posting 19 points while adding three assists and three steals. Also having an outstanding offensive night for Hostos was freshman guard Starr Garcia registering 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor including 2 of 3 from deep while also hauling down five rebounds. Sophomore forward Ayanna Brown led the way off the bench for the Caimans with 10 points and four rebounds.

As a team on offense the Caimans shot 38.1% from the three point line and dished out 11 assists. On defense Hostos held Rock Valley to 33.3% shooting from the floor while forcing them into 22 turnovers.
