Rochester, MN - The #11 seed Hostos Women's Basketball team made it two in a row in the land of 10,000 lakes knocking off the #3 seed Onondaga Lasers 77-62 in the quarterfinal of the NJCAA National Tournament. With the win the Caimans will now face #7 seed Minnesota Western in the Final Four with a trip to the National Championship game on the line. With a current record of 16-5 the Caimans are making their fifth straight trip to the NJCAA National Tournament and are in search of their third National Championship in program history cutting down the nets in 2018 and 2019.
The Caimans again started off hot and settled in quickly in the first quarter with a 24-14 run to start the game. Onondaga would respond cutting the Hostos lead to seven at the break with the score 38-31. But the Lasers came out of the halftime locker room on fire as they charged back and tied the score three different times. But Hostos would weather the storm and took command of the fourth quarter finishing the game on a 22-9 run to capture the win and a birth into the National Semifinal.
Leading the way for the Caimans was freshman guard/forward
Savannah Williams who posted a game high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Shania Lewis registered 17 points along with nine rebounds while freshman forward
Aiyana Hicks netted 13 points and four rebounds. Also having a strong night for the Caimans was freshman guard
Starr Garcia posting an 11 point and four rebound night while going 2 of 4 from downtown. Off the bench
Ayanna Brown snagged eight rebounds for the Caimans with five points.
As a team on offense Hostos shot 46.6% from the floor while shooting 35.3% from deep and dishing out 13 assists. On defense the Caimans held Onondaga to 40.4% from the floor but the Hostos full court trapping pressure made the biggest difference forcing 26 Laser turnovers.
Next up for the Caimans is a showdown with #7 seed Minnesota Western in the Final Four at 8:00pm EST on Friday, March 11. The winner will move onto the NJCAA Women's Basketball National Championship Game.
