Caimans Beat Minnesota West in Final Four To Earn Birth Into The National Championship Game

Rochester, MN - The Caimans Women's Basketball team pulled out their third victory in as many days beating #7 seed Minnesota West in the NJCAA National Tournament Semifinal by a score of 74-67. With the win the Caimans are headed back to the National Championship game for the third time in program history where they will take on the #1 seed Owens Community College from Ohio. Hostos will be looking for their third National Championship in program history having won it twice before in 2018 and 2019.

The first five minutes of the game against Minnesota West saw the Caimans jump out ahead going on a 9-2 run. The Blue Jays would respond keeping the game within five points before taking a lead with two minutes left in the half. The Caimans would respond with a five point spurt to end the half to send it into the locker room knotted up at 31-31. The second half saw multiple runs and lead changes from both the Blue Jays and Caimans with the Blue Jays taking a lead as large as nine points early in the fourth quarter. But the Caimans responded and went on a 14-2 run to take the lead back for good on the way to a 74-67 victory.

Leading the way for the #11 seed Caimans was freshman guard Dimon Walker who battled foul trouble all night but still netted a team high 16 points to go along two rebounds and two steals. Off the bench sophomore forward Ayanna Brown posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Also packing the stat sheet was sophomore guard Shania Lewis who notched 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Freshman guard Starr Garcia added 14 points and six rebounds and freshman guard/forward added nine points, six rebounds and a team high six assists.

As a team the Caimans defense held the Blue Jays to 37.3% from the floor and 22.2% from deep while forcing 14 Minnesota West turnovers while out rebounding the Blue Jays 40 to 36.

Next up for the Caimans is #1 seed Owens Community College in the 2022 NJCAA National Championship game on Saturday, March 12 at 6:00pm EST.
