Hostos Headed Back to NJCAA National Championship Game; Downs Western Tech, 68-47

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Mar. 15, 2019) - The No. 1 ranked and top-seeded Hostos Community College women's basketball team are set to play in the national title game once again, after a 68-47 victory against fifth-seeded Western Technical College in the semifinals of the 2019 NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship on Friday at the Arthur L. Scott Center at Northampton Community College.

The Caimans, who are in search of back-to-back national championships, will battle third-seeded Owens in Saturday's (Mar. 16) national title game at 7 p.m. A live broadcast of the game will be available by clicking here.

Hostos got out to another hot start and coasted the rest of the way. The Caimans outscored the Cavaliers, 36-15, in the opening 20 minutes of play, despite shooting only 30.9 percent (13-of-42) from the field in the half.

Sophomore forward Kayla Wilson led all players in the effort with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. She shot 6-of-12 from the field and 8-of-12 from the line.

"I felt like we played well. We pressured the ball without fouling. We were very disciplined," Wilson said. "We are hungry and want to leave a legacy. If we play our brand of basketball, we will be fine."

Freshman center Apilyn Bonny provided 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Sophomore forward Desiree Tolbert and sophomore guard Ellease Billings scored 11 points apiece. Tolbert also grabbed nine rebounds and dished two assists, while Billings pulled down 12 rebounds and swiped five steals.

Hostos Head Coach DeVernie Winston was excited about the win, but knew his team hadn't reached its ultimate goal yet, stating: "Our concern isn't them (what team we play). It's us. If we prepare and do what we need to do in order to be successful, I don't think there's any team in the country that can compete with us."
