Hostos Women's Basketball Beats Massasoit in a Battle of #1 vs. #2

BRONX, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2019) - When the national rankings are released this week, there should be a new No. 1 team atop the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Poll.

After sitting at No. 2 for 10 consecutive weeks, Hostos Community College upset No. 1 ranked Massasoit Community College, 87-79, at the Swamp Saturday afternoon in the Bronx.

Hostos is in search of its first No. 1 national ranking in the regular season in 2018-19. The Caimans were tabbed as the nation's top team in the NJCAA preseason poll.

"Today's result was a great win for our women's basketball team and athletic program. Massasoit is a very good and tough team. They deserved to be the No. 1 ranked team all season long," said Hostos Head Coach DeVernie Winston. "We have been guided by our post play over the past few games and they came huge in the win this afternoon."

Winston then exclaimed: "We are working to make a hard push into the national tournament and build on the momentum we have to win another national championship."

Hostos shot an exceptional 63.5 percent (33-of-52) from the floor and had five players finish in double figures in scoring.

Freshman center Apilyn Bonny led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in the process. Sophomore guard Regine Blakney filled the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Ellease Billings and sophomore forwards Desiree Tolbert and Kayla Wilson all had double-doubles.

Billings collected 15 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to dishing out four assists and swiping two steals. Wilson poured in 12 points and crashed the glass for 14 rebounds. Tolbert chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hostos is set to be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region XV Tournament. The Caimans are looking to capture their third-consecutive title. The first round will be held at higher seeds this Tuesday (Feb. 26), with the semifinals and final taking place at BMCC Gymnasium next weekend (Mar. 2-3) in Manhattan.
